Which Hip Implants are a Problem?
In an effort to accommodate younger patients with more active lifestyles, DePuy Orthopedics designed several hip replacement and resurfacing systems meant to provide more flexibility and range of motion.
These DePuy products include DePuy’s Pinnacle Hip Replacement System, the ASR XL Acetabular System and the ASR Hip Resurfacing System.
A key component of these hip replacements is the metal-on-metal construction that was intended to prevent failing caused by overuse. However, this design actually led to an increased rate of failure along with a whole host of other extremely serious complications.
Studies have shown that DePuy’s metal-on-metal hip systems have design flaws that cause:
- Metallosis – Metal particles from the device are shed into the body leading to metal poisoning.
- Severe Pain – Severe often unexplained pain in the hip, thigh and groin area.
- Dislocation and bone fracture near the implant site
- Increased risk of cancer
- Increased failure rate
- Multiple hip revision surgeries – Many hip implant recipients have been subjected to as many as five revision surgeries.
Despite doctors claiming otherwise, DePuy touted the metal-on-metal implants as safe and effective; putting their financial interests ahead of their patient’s.
DePuy ASR Implant Recalled, Pinnacle Still on Market
In 2010, after nearly 100,000 hip replacements , Deputy Orthopedics recalled two products from it’s ASR line. The ASR XL Acetabular System and ASR Hip Resurfacing System were both failing a rate that was much higher than other types of hip replacement systems – the failure rate was as high as 12 percent after five years. The metal-on-metal construction was deemed to be the problem as it’s design caused heavy friction within the device. This friction led to metal shedding from the device into the patient’s bloodstream and surrounding tissue.
The DePuy Pinnacle implant faces similar issues as the ASR line, but has yet to be recalled. Several studies have shown the Pinnacle hip implant to have an an observed failure rate of around 10 percent. What’s more, the Pinnacle line used a cobalt-chromium-molybdenum liner which generated other adverse side effects including necrosis, ruptured tendons and fluid pockets around the device, and cobalt poisoning.
